City of Masks (Chapter 4)

It was already night. I helped Renei prepare our dinner. Staying in the kitchen gave us access to a couple of tools including a can opener.

There was no electricity. But the night sky seemed bright enough to give us the light we need as we enjoyed our meal. I was eating rather fast.

“You sound like the masked people already” Renei joked.

“Tried talking to them?”

“No way. They freaked me out. But I did eavesdrop a bit. Still didn’t make sense.”

“Hmm…”

“Did you try talking to them?”

“Well, I asked for directions.”

Renei spat out her food. “Why would you do that?”

“I was lost. I thought they were people like you and me.”

“They’re only tame while the sun’s up though.”

We heard loud footsteps outside accompanied by a series of louds, growls and shrieks.

“Is that them?” I asked.

“Yup.”

We peaked from the counter. The restaurant’s glass walls allowed us to see outside. We saw a bunch of masked people carrying lanterns. They were pulling a wagon with a huge white sack on it. I could see movement coming from it. One of them began beating the sack with a stick.

“What’s on the wagon?” I asked.

“People” Renei replied. “Their own kind.”

A few stronger-looking masked men lifted the sack then threw it on the floor and began beating it. One guy raised a huge axe and aimed towards the cargo.

I looked away as the axe landed on them. Screams echoed loudly then slowly degraded into whining. Renei was silent. I could imagine those masked people enjoying their feast.
